The advent of Self-driving cars could be the demise of these things in the future

There has been a lot of advancement in the area of self driving cars. It has become a reality now with Tesla, Google and others working on it to get to a safe level of full autonomous driving, running trials and iterations to tweak out the bugs to minimize or possibly eliminate risk to pedestrians and other people driving in the vicinity and avoid possible damage to the surrounding infrastructure.

Self driving cars, although a great advancement in technology, has its own set of consequences. It might be the demise of :

  1. Taxi driver profession (and the annoying last minute cancellation or rejection by these taxi drivers)
  2. Bus driver profession (Autonomous buses could help in bettering traffic conditions and seamless route management while removing the possibility of reckless driving by irresponsible bus drivers)
  3. Chauffeur profession (the rich get richer eh? They save more money reducing another expense, although this one seems like a disadvantage given how good it feels to have your door being opened, luggage being carried for you along with the respect showered on you)
  4. Truck driver profession (the end of those tiring and dangerous driving done by some of the truck drivers on roads with high probability of accidents. There are some truck drivers who sometimes drive to the extent of falling asleep behind the wheel just to reach deadlines. Now trucks can drive around seamlessly all day, saving money for businessmen and possible reducing the cost of goods and transport)
  5. DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol or other prohibited substances. Now people would be able to have a good time without having to worry about DUI. This also plays into women's safety)
  6. Interceptors (used to detect and apprehend drivers who drive over the specified speed limit. Over-speeding can be avoided which stems from people being late or impatient and reckless. Self driving cars can plot the most time-efficient routes)
  7. Cops stopping you unnecessarily, just to let you off with a bribe ( I live in India)
  8. The waste of those precious minutes trying to park our cars (We get late to movies and what not)
  9. The hassle of having to walk so far away from where you've parked to your destination and back.
  10. Accidents (The greatest advantage of self driving cars and the major reason for the innovation in this field is to avoid accidents and save as many lives as possible)
  11. Finally, not allowing ambulances to move through traffic ( Again, I live in India)
  12. The hassle of using navigation apps while driving (although there is voice navigation, it is still a distraction while driving in my opinion)
  13. Not being able to use mobile phones while driving (Even with Bluetooth technology, talking on the phone while driving is always a safety concern. This could also be another reason for people to spend more time on their phones unnecessarily)
  14. Falling asleep behind the wheel, i.e, sleepy driving  (If you've worked late into the night or haven't slept well, this is perfect to get that nap in a self driving car before reaching your destination, so you can be at your best level of alertness. Needless to say, this advantage of self driving cars improves road safety manifold)
  15. Not being able to complete that last bit of work cause you're late to a meeting (You can just work, while your car drives you there)
  16. Not being able to have your breakfast cause you're late, again. (Munch on your favourite food and/or sip on your coffee while your car takes you to your destination on time)

It might be the birth of mass unemployment and first instance of AI taking over humanity, just like in some of those dystopian science-fiction movies.

The 3 UFO Cases the U.S. Government Actually Couldn't Solve

When it comes to the topic of UFOs, it is incredibly easy to be a skeptic. If you are a rational person who refuses to blindly believe in pseudoscience, the modern landscape of extraterrestrial claims is exhausting. Far too often, the "evidence" is just a blurry piece of drone footage, a documentary featuring a cheap Halloween mask, or a convoluted conspiracy theory that falls apart under five minutes of logical scrutiny. But what happens when you strip away the tin-foil hats, ignore the pop culture myths, and look strictly at the declassified, historical data? Illustration generated exclusively for Zestrun From 1947 to 1969, the U.S. Air Force investigated over 12,000 reported sightings. While they successfully debunked the vast majority as hoaxes or misperceptions of natural phenomena, they were left with hundreds of cases classified officially as "Unknown." Here is a rational, evidence-based look at the history of these unknowns, and three of the most baffli...
